Discount Books: Rare Textbooks

June 19, 2008 – 10:51 am

Rare textbooks can be prohibitively expensive. These books are out of print and there are only a select few available. The fewer there are of a book, the higher the price is going to shoot up. It is a good idea to shop around and not take the first price you see.

However, rare textbooks arent only out of print. Some books are published by a small press and have a limited run. This will also shoot up the price. This limited run has no bearing on the quality of writing–but if it is an obscure subject, such as 18th century geological theories, there is no need to make a major pressing.

Obscure Subjects
Once you pick a major in college, you will find that you will be reading a lot more rare textbooks. Introduction to books are normally used in first-year courses, but as you specialize the courses and the texts will become more specialized as well. For this reason, you should be prepared to buy some books which have a limited run.

It is a good idea to find a source for the books you are required to buy. In recent years, college bookstores have started to be run by major chains which has lowered prices somewhat, but not as much as online retailers. College bookstores have been threatened by the growing internet marketplace. However, the majority of students still shop at the college bookstores because it is convenient, not because it is cheap.
